Choosing the right shoes for your children

My feet are a bit funny. I find that I can’t wear certain shoes regardless of how much I try to break them in, and other shoes just fit me like a glove. Very often big brands and the most expensive shoes are the ones I struggle with most so I can’t automatically trust that buying brands is the best choice. This is no different for Isabelle. Little feet are so important so here are some tips for finding the right shoes for your children.
Where do you start?
We really do try to make sure every pair of shoes is fitted for Isabelle, but this isn’t always practical or possible. The most important thing, I find, is to make sure that you do get your child’s feet measured relatively regularly. Whether you buy from the shop is another question. I won’t ever forget when I took Isabelle for an impromptu trip to the shoe shop to find that she had actually gone up by two shoe sizes. I genuinely hadn’t realised her shoes were tight, but I felt so guilty that she’d been uncomfortable. I think mum guilt may have been a part of that, as I’m sure she’d have told me if they hurt, but still, I felt awful for a couple of days about it.
I didn’t actually realise it is possible to find a “shop style” foot measurer online, which means you could measure your kid’s feet at home without leaving the house. Now I really hate the whole ticket system in the shop – so this is something I am most definitely on board with. Obviously, I’m sure there are other aspects that the professional shoe measurers look for when fitting shoes in the stores, but it is definitely an option if you need a quick check or if those brands are just too much out of reach price wise. I did have a google and found this website which tells you how to properly measure your child’s feet.
The other option is to be a bit more basic using a tape measure as your aid, here is a guide for that method.
Buying the shoes reasonably
After you’ve measured their little feet the next step is to choose the right place to buy the shoes and the right shoes to buy! If you have a “cruiser” you need to get different shoes than a “walker” – they tend to have softer soles to have a transition from barefoot to real hard soled shoes. So make sure you’re getting something suitable for their tiny feet.
For walkers then you have the choice of the whole crop. I would recommend reading reviews of websites and shopping around for the best deals. A site like Strawberry Children is great for bargains such as these cute

A tip I have found that works maybe 50/50 – but worth a try – was to look local, some of the local non-chain stores sometimes have amazing bargains, however, you may well find they are more expensive. January sales and summer sales are a good time to shop – but don’t buy too far in advance in case their width changes and your bargains aren’t even worn.
I wouldn’t recommend buying used shoes online (like on Facebook etc), as the tread and way that every child individually walks means that they may hinder rather than help your child’s feet.
Finally, it is a process of trial and error, like with us as grown-ups, some shoes will be perfect and last ages, others will not be as good a fit, but it’s something you won’t know unless you give them a try. Keep an eye out for blisters (big alarm bell, obviously) and see if they walk funny when wearing them – otherwise, happy shopping and there is no crime in picking the cutest shoes you can find!
