Ticking things off your Grandma’s bucket list
Do you have a bucket list? It’s trendy to have a list of things you want to do before you, ahem, expire, but have you actually ticked anything off it yet? I have quite a modest list – but I do very strongly believe in “YOLO” – because you really only get one life, and you need to make it count. I am planning on doing a 30 before I’m 30 (which is next year by the way) but for now, there are only a few things I want to do in my life.
Beyond completing my own bucket list, I am attempting to tick a few off my Gran’s bucket list too. The biggest thing I actually want to do is the easiest one for me to actually implement. I want to take my Grandma on a cruise. Now I don’t mean a full 14-night extravaganza around the Caribbean (who wouldn’t want to do that?) but just a little 3 or 4 nighter so that she can experience what it’s like to go on one. I KNOW she would love it and it’s something she desperately wants to do, and I would too. But it isn’t always as easy as just booking it and driving down to Southampton.
One thing that cruises are known for is their enormous ships. One thing that isn’t great when your 80+ years old and not that light on your feet, is an enormous ship. So it’s really something I need to consider if I am going to book the break. It’s clear that walking alone won’t be suitable and that it would actually be a detriment to the holiday.
The point of going on a cruise is the luxury and being able to enjoy the atmosphere and being tired and frustrated isn’t going to lend to that. So I think if/when we book it we’ll need some extra transport.
I would love for us to get my Gran a folding mobility scooter or something similar as it will give back her independence – she’ll be able to zip around the ship at her leisure rather than feeling worn out. When I’ve been on my previous cruise holidays they’ve been everywhere, so I know that if we use one she won’t feel out of place. Everywhere is serviced by lifts as well, so the ships really are accessible for everyone. I haven’t got a clue about the most important things to look for when picking a suitable one for her though, so I’ll be looking for advice on which to choose when the time comes.
As for where we’ll go, I’m not sure, you can’t get far in 4 days but, to be honest, the most important thing is the going, not where we’ll be visiting. I always book my cruises last minute either with specialist cruise websites or directly with the company as you can shop around and get some great discounts – last minute breaks can be as cheap as £100 a day per person, which is amazing for full board dining.
Do you have anything on your bucket list that you’ve got planned to do?
