All-year-round tips for saving money

If you’re one of the many people who worries about money a lot, then you probably also wonder why you spend more time thinking about it than you do saving it. It’s one of those things that we promise ourselves we’ll get around to – opening a savings account, investigating the stock market, keeping a change jar…

The truth is that you don’t have to make a huge amount of effort or a great gesture to save funds. By changing the way you do what you already do you can find your bank balance looks a lot healthier at the end of the month – and year. Here’s some really easy ideas to adopt – you won’t even know you’ve started saving!

Order your heating oil now

It’s the summer – and a really hot one too! This means that your bulk order from supersaveroil.ie is probably as cheap right now as it’s ever going to be. Buy in as much as you can afford now, even if you have to wait until autumn for the final top-up, and you’ll save loads of money. You’ll also feel very smug once the first frosts appear.

Run down your freezer stocks

This might seem a bit weird – using everything in your freezer so it’s empty. If, however, you can avoid doing a big shop for a couple of weeks every year, then that’s got to be at least €100 and probably more. Look through your stocks – there’s always an almost-empty bag of sweetcorn, some bacon, peas and so on. With a few eggs and some decent bread, you’ve got a bubble and squeak or a frittata right there.

Order your staples online

Think about the products you use week-in, week-out and see if you can order them online rather than buying them in every week or month. You’ll probably be able to get a bulk order or a multi-buy discount, which will shave off a few euros. In addition to this, you’re not tempted to pick up any little extras or treats at the checkout.

Speaking of bulk-buying

You often find, when you’re looking at bulk-buying, that there’s generic alternatives to your washing powder or liquid, your bleach, your washing up liquid and so on. By switching to these alternatives, you’ll save even more money. If you’re unsure about the generic being as good as your branded product, have a quick look down the active ingredients list.

Do keep that change jar

Coins have value! If you get into the habit of emptying your purse of smaller-denomination coins and plonking them into a jar in the hallway or next to the kettle, then you’ll soon have quite a pile. The best thing about this habit is that you then start gradually changing the smaller coins up for larger denominations and then finally notes. You see your money changing – and growing – before your eyes!

You can also use a rounding-up app to do this for you when you make purchases with your debit or credit card. It’s like magic, only it’s very real!
