60 seconds to save the world with Co-op Midcounties Society
*This is a sponsored post.*
You may remember that earlier in the year I was challenged to save all my single-use plastics for a week to put into perspective quite how much is sent to landfill every week, month and year. Well, I have been asked this time to make a change in 60 seconds to show how easy it is to make a difference, even when you’re short on time.
So what did I do?
I wracked my brains to work out what I could do that I could continue after the challenge had ended. In Warwickshire, we don’t have a very good recycling programme. When I lived in Coventry (my home town) it was brilliant, you had one big blue wheelie bin and shoved all your recycling in it, mixed and all. However, in my current town, you have bags and boxes in which you separate everything. It can be a bit of a minefield as if you put even one thing in the wrong box or bag, they don’t take any of it. I have gotten better practised but it can put me off making the effort.
60 seconds to change the world, starting… NOW
So I decided to make sure I concentrated on the plastics I use. I am pretty good at cardboard and paper, so I went online and printed a list of all the plastic things I can recycle and went through my fridge and marked all the bits I could put in the bag after I’d used them. It meant I didn’t have to question what went where, and when I’d used it I was reminded to put it in the bag. This had the added perk that I’d earmarked all my recycling for the whole week.

I was really surprised at how many plastics I have in my cupboards and fridge/freezer, however, what surprised me more is how much plastic you can recycle with a bit of education and time. I am very aware that even with recycling in mind, it would be much better to reduce the amount of plastic I buy. If I am in the shops I do try and choose the items with cardboard packaging, but there is a long way to go to make the balance shift from mostly plastic packaging to mostly cardboard.

Co-op Midcounties Society are really working hard to make a change with how we shop and what we do with our used packaging, not only is their focus to reduce single-use plastic food packaging, but to also recycle 99% of their waste, phase out plastic straws and cutlery from stores and also replace single-use plastic bags with compostable bags. One thing that is becoming more fashionable is to bring your own containers to fill. This is a massive shift and one that Co-op are making moves towards. I would absolutely love to be able to do this in the mainstream and I can’t wait to see what comes next!
So now I challenge you to make a change in 60 seconds. Make sure you use the hashtag #1Changein1Minute and tag me @mumsymidwife and also @themidcountiescooperative with your ideas! I would love to get some more tips to help make changes.
