Are people inherently good or bad?

So this is a bit off the cuff, it won’t be one of my usual types of posts and is a little more serious than I am used to, but bear with me. You may, or may not, know that I am a massive crime fan, now I don’t mean committing them, I’m much too much of a goody-two-shoes to ever break the rules, but I love true crime. So much so that I have a real, “Death Row” pen pal. Controversial, I know, but it was a bucket list thing for me and when I met my lovely bestie Daniella from Madame Gourmand, she showed me how to sign up. We’ve now been writing for a year.

I have been watching the media closely this last few months, rife with terrorism and dirty politics; but a few days ago, something caught my eye more than the others. Ian Brady, the “Moors Murderer” died. I have spent hours watching all the documentaries on him and Myra Hindley, and the atrocities from the 1960s. It got me thinking; are we, as humans inherently good or bad?

What do you think, are we bad people on the whole; or good, honest people? Or is it somewhere in between?

I would like to think I am a good person, I try hard to do the right thing for me and my friends and family; I’m stupidly generous and would give almost anyone my last Rolo if it would make them happy. But, I guess I’m also selfish; I like my sleep and pay for my daughter to go into childcare so I can indulge my hobby of blogging and writing, although it does bring in a bit of money for me.

Where do you think you fall on the scale?

Even though I doubt any of us are too far to each end of the spectrum, I genuinely believe that on the whole, we are good people. Take for example the simple act of asking a stranger to watch your things at a coffee shop whilst you go and get a drink or pop to the toilet. In those minutes you are trusting someone you’ve never met and will probably never see again with possibly your phone, car keys and maybe your laptop. And I would bet 99% of the time your possessions will be right where you left them when you get back.

The media is saturated with Trump, Putin, the General Election, and other morbid soundbites. But I just want to put a little message out into the world, we aren’t that bad, some are admittedly, but on the whole, we are good people.

What good deed have you done today?

I think those criminals who murder and torture have something wired differently in their brain. Their conscience is turned off, or their feelings are different. I think they’re born that way or events in childhood trigger it. I don’t think they’re born ‘evil’ but become so because of several factors, but their brains must be different in some way. I’m fascinated too!
